ADR CenterJob title: Assessor (Case Decision-Maker), Out-of-Court Dispute Settlement Body under the Digital Services Act
Location: Remote, anywhere in the EU
Employment type: Contract / consultancy (self-employed, per-case fees)
Seniority: Junior-Mid level
Industry: Legal Services · Technology, Information and Internet
About us
ADR Center is the largest dispute resolution provider in Italy and one of the most established in Europe. Founded in 1998, we have administered more than 70,000 ADR procedures and we run over 7,000 mediations a year.
Our ODS division is certified under Article 21 of the Digital Services Act (Regulation (EU) 2022/2065) as an out-of-court dispute settlement body to handle disputes in 16 EU languages between users and online platforms, including the very large online platforms: content removals, account suspensions and terminations, impersonation and fake profiles, coordinated fake reviews, intellectual property complaints.
This is the practical side of the DSA. When a platform makes a decision and a user disagrees, we are where that decision gets an independent, reasoned review.
The role
As an Assessor you review individual cases submitted by users against online platforms and issue a reasoned assessment of the platform's decision. You work remotely and entirely within our case management system, as part of a case team and under the supervision of a senior lawyer who assigns your caseload, provides quality and consistency review, and is there for the difficult calls.
What the work looks like:
- Assess admissibility of incoming complaints against the criteria of Article 21 DSA and our rules of procedure.
- Review the case file: the user's submission, the platform's statement of reasons, the content at issue, the applicable terms of service and community standards.
- Apply the DSA, the relevant national law and the platform's own policies to the facts, and identify where the platform's decision does or does not hold.
- Issue a reasoned written assessment in plain language, in the language of the case, within the deadlines set by the procedure.
- Escalate the cases that raise novel points (AI-generated impersonation, extortion through coordinated fake reviews, political speech misclassified by automated systems) so that they feed our internal guidance.
- Record everything in the case management system: no parallel spreadsheets, no work outside the platform.
- Take part in the regular team calls where we align on recurring questions and keep our decisions consistent across languages.
What we are looking for
Essential:
- A law degree and a solid legal background. Practising lawyers and in-house counsel are all welcome.
- Demonstrated ability to work daily inside a case management system or similar structured workflow tool, at volume and to deadline.
- Strong legal analysis and, above all, the ability to write a short, clear, well-reasoned decision. We value precision over length.
- Previous professional experience with large online platforms: trust and safety, content moderation policy, platform legal or policy teams, notice and takedown, regulatory compliance on the platform side, or work as counsel in disputes against platforms.
- Excellent English, written and spoken.
- Native or full professional command of one or two other EU languages. We are currently prioritising Bulgarian, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Spanish and Italian.
- Full independence and impartiality: no current employment or engagement with an online platform party to our cases, and no conflict of interest.
- Full respect for confidentiality and data protection: you will handle users' personal data under our GDPR obligations.
Nice to have:
- Working knowledge of the DSA, the e-Commerce framework, the Copyright Directive, the GDPR or national defamation and identity theft law.
- Experience in mediation, arbitration, consumer ADR or ODR.
What we offer
- Per-case fees, paid monthly against invoice. Fee levels are discussed at interview and reflect language, complexity and volume.
- Genuine flexibility: you agree your caseload with your supervisor and fit the work around your other commitments - no fixed hours.
- Full onboarding on the DSA framework, our rules of procedure and the case management system, followed by continuous supervision from a senior lawyer.
- A real team rather than isolated freelance work: colleagues in other languages, shared guidance and a supervisor who answers.
- Casework that shapes how Article 21 is actually applied in Europe, with a team that has been building dispute resolution systems since 1998.
