About The Role
The Trust and Safety Foundations team within Checkout Engineering at Affi is responsible for building and maintaining the foundational systems and data capabilities that enable the company to assess consumer risk accurately and meet its credit reporting obligations. This critical infrastructure intersects with data quality, system reliability, regulatory compliance, and risk management, serving as the backbone for operational accuracy and scalability. As a Staff Software Engineer in this team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical strategy, leading complex initiatives, and ensuring the robustness of our systems. Your expertise will help transform ambiguous challenges into clear, actionable solutions, and your leadership will influence both project execution and team development. This role demands a high level of technical judgment, ownership, and the ability to navigate complex, high-impact domains effectively.

Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience designing, developing, and deploying backend systems at scale.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Kotlin.
- Extensive experience with distributed systems architecture and implementation.
- Hands-on experience with cloud services like AWS, and familiarity with technologies such as MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
- Proven track record of delivering major system features, components, or deprecating functionalities with a clear technical and execution plan.
- Strong understanding of system reliability, high availability, and operational best practices.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of collaborating effectively across global teams.
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous environments and adapt to evolving technical landscapes.
- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Define and execute the technical strategy for the team on a long-term basis, aligning with business goals.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including product management, design, and analytics—to ensure technical solutions are sustainable, risk-aware, and aligned with product objectives.
- Lead the design and implementation of scalable, reliable backend systems that support trust and safety initiatives.
- Establish and promote best practices for code quality, system design, and operational excellence through code reviews, documentation, and technical talks.
- Develop and maintain monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes to ensure system stability and availability.
- Mentor and develop engineering talent within the team, fostering a culture of ownership, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Manage operational aspects of systems, including triage, incident management, and process improvements to support "keep the lights on" efforts.
