About The Role

Reddit is seeking a highly skilled Staff Data Scientist to join the Safety Insights Data Science team within the Trust & Safety organization. This role is pivotal in shaping the measurement strategy for user safety, developing frameworks to quantify and monitor safety experiences, and evaluating the effectiveness of safety interventions. As a key partner to Safety Product, Engineering, and Machine Learning teams, you will lead efforts to define safety metrics, design experiments, and build scalable models that enhance Reddit’s safety ecosystem. Your insights will directly influence strategic decisions, product development, and policy enforcement aimed at protecting Reddit’s communities from harmful content and behaviors. This position offers a remote-friendly environment within the United States, with optional in-office visits for those near our physical locations in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or M.S. degree in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related quantitative fields.
• If holding an M.S., a minimum of 8+ years of industry experience in data science, applied science, or related roles such as enforcement engineering or fraud detection.
• If holding a Ph.D., at least 4+ years of relevant industry experience.
• Proficiency in statistical analysis, programming languages such as Python, and SQL.
• Experience with designing and executing experiments, causal inference methods, and impact evaluation.
• Strong technical communication skills, capable of translating complex analyses into clear narratives for diverse audiences.
• Ability to work in fast-paced, innovative environments and prioritize high-impact initiatives.
• Experience mentoring junior team members and fostering a culture of rigor and curiosity.
  
  

Responsibilities

• Lead the development of the measurement strategy for user safety by defining key safety metrics, frameworks, and dashboards to monitor safety experiences across Reddit.
• Utilize data-driven and science-backed methods to inform safety product development and assess the impact of new policies, features, and enforcement actions.
• Design and conduct experiments, including quasi-experimental and causal analyses such as difference-in-differences, synthetic controls, and matching techniques to evaluate safety initiatives.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance scalable models and prototypes using statistical, machine learning, and Generative AI methodologies to improve safety detection and enforcement workflows.
• Support product development lifecycle from problem framing, exploratory analysis, experimentation, to post-launch evaluation and monitoring.
• Stay updated on advancements in machine learning, large language models, and related technologies, assessing their applicability to safety and abuse detection.
• Translate complex analytical findings into actionable insights and strategic recommendations for stakeholders across Safety and Moderation teams.
• Mentor junior data scientists and analysts, promoting best practices and innovative approaches in safety analytics.
