About the Role

We are seeking a strategic and execution-oriented Director of Platform Governance to lead end-to-end compliance coordination in support of new and emerging business initiatives, beginning with the launch and scale of eBay Live!

This leader will be responsible for ensuring that new verticals follow eBay policies and marketplace standards. The initial priority for this role will be eBay Live; however, the broader mandate is to horizontally translate and operationalize Platform Governance programs across new lines of business, product innovations, and marketplace formats as they are developed.

The Director will serve as the connective tissue between Platform Governance and cross-functional teams - Product, Engineering, Risk, Legal, Operations, and Customer Support - to embed governance principles into product design and lifecycle execution from inception through scale. This role will help establish a repeatable governance launch framework that can be applied to future innovations, ensuring new experiences are built responsibly without slowing speed to market.

The ideal candidate is a strong operator and systems thinker who can scale governance programs beyond traditional listing flows, anticipate emerging risks in novel formats such as live commerce, and build durable, forward-looking compliance mechanisms that enable innovation while protecting marketplace integrity! This role reports to the Head of Platform Governance and Strategy.

What You Will Accomplish

Governance Strategy for New Products & Live Commerce

  • Own the end-to-end platform governance framework for eBay Live, ensuring listing and item compliance across pre-live, live, and post-live phases.

  • Develop and institutionalize a scalable governance launch model that can be applied to future product innovations and new lines of business.

  • Partner early with Product and Engineering during concept and design phases to embed compliance guardrails into new experiences by design.

  • Translate existing Platform Governance programs (PRPS, IP, enforcement, repeat violator frameworks, etc.) into fit-for-purpose mechanisms for emerging formats.

  • Anticipate and mitigate novel compliance risks introduced by real-time, social, or non-traditional commerce models.

Cross-Functional Program Leadership

  • Serve as the central coordination point across Platform Governance, Trust, Risk, Legal, Product, Engineering, Customer Support, and Operations to ensure alignment on compliance requirements for new initiatives.

  • Define clear governance requirements, decision frameworks, and accountability models to support product launches at scale.

  • Drive structured launch readiness reviews from a governance perspective, identifying dependencies and resolving risk trade-offs.

  • Ensure governance requirements are embedded in roadmaps and not retrofitted post-launch.

Operational Excellence & Risk Management

  • Establish measurable input/output metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of detection, enforcement, and remediation in new product environments.

  • Build scalable workflows for proactive risk identification and rapid issue escalation in dynamic formats such as Live.

  • Develop a risk-based framework that protects the highest-impact areas while minimizing friction for sellers and product teams.

  • Partner with analytics teams to build reporting mechanisms that inform iterative improvements and executive visibility.

Policy Integration & Enablement

  • Translate marketplace policies into actionable operational standards and seller guidance tailored to new product experiences.

  • Collaborate with Policy and Legal teams to ensure regulatory and platform requirements are proactively addressed during product development.

  • Support evolution of policies where new formats introduce edge cases or ambiguity.

  • Drive clear customer-facing messaging and education to maintain trust as new commerce experiences scale.

Leadership & Influence

  • Act as a strategic thought partner to senior leaders launching new experiences, balancing innovation velocity with marketplace safety.

  • Represent Platform Governance in executive reviews, go/no-go decisions, and crisis management scenarios.

  • Lead high-priority, cross-functional initiatives that require horizontal influence and structured program execution.

What You Will Bring

  • 10+ years of experience in governance, risk management, compliance, trust & safety, or related domains within technology, e-commerce, marketplaces, or platform businesses.

  • Demonstrated success operationalizing governance programs in new or rapidly evolving product environments.

  • Proven ability to lead sophisticated, cross-functional initiatives requiring coordination across product, engineering, legal, and operations.

  • Strong understanding of listing compliance, prohibited and restricted items, intellectual property, and marketplace integrity frameworks.

  • Experience building repeatable programmatic frameworks that scale across multiple business lines.

  • Strong executive presence with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and articulate risk trade-offs clearly.

  • Experience in live commerce, creator ecosystems, real-time moderation, or emerging marketplace formats is a plus.
