Role summary:

Walmart is seeking a Distinguished Software Engineer to lead the technical architecture and development of large-scale backend systems supporting Marketplace Trust. As the senior-most technical individual contributor within a business-focused engineering pod, you will drive complex, cross-organizational initiatives from architectural design through implementation, delivering measurable business outcomes. This highly hands-on role requires deep distributed systems expertise, strong engineering judgment, and the ability to influence technical strategy across multiple teams. You will partner with engineering, product, risk, legal, and security leaders to build systems that protect marketplace integrity while supporting seller experience and business growth.

About the team:

At Walmart Global Tech, the Marketplace Trust team builds systems that establish and maintain trust across Walmart's rapidly growing eCommerce marketplace. Our platforms support seller identity and onboarding, listing and catalog integrity, fraud and abuse detection, policy enforcement, and seller communications. We develop scalable, reliable solutions that protect customers, support legitimate sellers, and enable marketplace growth.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the architecture, design, and development of large-scale, low-latency distributed backend systems.
  • Remain hands-on with critical technical implementations, complex problem-solving, and code reviews.
  • Define architectural blueprints, RFCs, and technical standards that guide engineering decisions across multiple teams.
  • Translate complex business problems into scalable technical solutions, driving initiatives from design through production.
  • Architect secure, resilient, and highly available systems supporting seller verification, marketplace integrity, fraud prevention, and policy enforcement.
  • Evaluate opportunities to apply AI and automation while considering accuracy, explainability, false positives, latency, and cost.
  • Drive technical alignment across engineering, product, risk, legal, and security teams, resolving competing requirements and architectural trade-offs.
  • Mentor senior engineers and architects, influence technical strategy, and deliver measurable business outcomes.

What you'll bring:

  • Extensive experience designing, building, and scaling complex backend systems and distributed architectures.
  • Strong hands-on programming experience in at least one modern backend language, with the ability to design, implement, and review complex production systems.
  • Deep expertise in distributed systems, system design, cloud-native technologies, scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Proven ability to lead complex architectural initiatives and influence technical decisions across multiple engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated ownership of business-critical systems, from problem definition and architecture through production and measurable outcomes.
  • Experience developing technical standards, mentoring senior engineers, and influencing engineering leadership.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to resolve technical and business trade-offs across organizations.
  • Experience in eCommerce, marketplaces, payments, identity, fraud prevention, trust and safety, or other large-scale transactional systems is a plus.
