About The Team

The Policy & Safety group builds the infrastructure that keeps digital experiences safe at scale. This includes rule engines, enforcement pipelines, policy configuration systems, and compliance data platforms behind content moderation. The team works at the intersection of backend platform engineering, machine learning systems, and regulatory compliance, partnering closely with trust and safety, legal, and content protection teams. Their work ensures that safety is built into products by default while supporting regulatory requirements and ongoing product innovation.

About The Role

Safety by Default is a cross-cutting initiative to build safety into every content type and feature from the start, rather than retrofitting it after launch. This role involves collaborating with teams across the organization and focusing on projects where you can have the greatest impact. It requires quickly getting up to speed on new problem spaces, bringing consistency and best practices across a broad range of systems.

This is a role for someone who thrives on variety, context switching, and building trusted relationships across engineering teams. You should be comfortable operating autonomously, adapting to different team cultures, and influencing technical direction in codebases you did not originally build.

What You'll Do

  • Work across multiple teams within the Safety by Default initiative, contributing backend engineering wherever it is needed most.
  • Build APIs and services that expose policy logic across detection, enforcement, and compliance systems.
  • Contribute to the design and expansion of core platform capabilities used by multiple teams.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines that feed structured policy data into downstream machine learning models and enforcement systems.
  • Help teams integrate safety requirements into new features and content types early in the development process.
  • Ensure policies are ingested, structured, versioned, and reliable within the systems that consume them.
  • Collaborate closely with detection, enforcement, and compliance partners to translate regulatory and compliance requirements into engineering solutions and audit capabilities.
  • Write clean, well-tested, and well-documented code that multiple teams and downstream consumers can depend on.

Who You Are

  • Experienced in building and operating backend services and APIs at production scale.
  • Proficient in a backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, or a similar language.
  • Strong understanding of API design, schema evolution, backward compatibility, and data modeling for auditability, versioning, and efficient querying.
  • Experience with data pipelines and an understanding of the trade-offs between real-time and batch processing.
  • Comfortable navigating unfamiliar codebases, learning new domains quickly, and contributing effectively without needing complete ownership.
  • Thoughtful about the downstream impact of engineering decisions, particularly around policy logic, enforcement, and regulatory reporting.
  • Experience working in regulated or compliance-sensitive environments, or a strong interest in developing expertise in this area.
  • Strong collaborator who builds trust quickly across teams and communicates technical decisions effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working with ambiguity and identifying high-impact opportunities independently.
