ABOUT THIS ROLE
As a Software Development Engineer on the Fraud Defense Engineering team, you will help protect Audible's ecosystem — safeguarding creators, listeners, and customers from fraud and abuse across all global marketplaces. You'll contribute to building intelligent detection systems, investigation platforms, and automated enforcement capabilities that operate at scale. This is a high-impact role where your technical contributions directly protect the integrity of our business and the trust of millions of customers worldwide. ABOUT THE TEAM
The Fraud Defense Engineering team sits within Audible's inSpire organization. We build the tooling, platforms, and automated systems that protect the integrity and trustworthiness of Audible's business. Our primary focus areas include:
- Develop and improve investigation and case management tools that empower internal operations teams to enforce fraud policies effectively
- Collaborate cross-functionally with data scientists, product managers, policy teams, and distributed teams across time zones to implement enforcement strategies
- Write clean, well-tested code, participate actively in code reviews, and follow sound engineering practices that balance enforcement speed with customer experience
- Contribute to complex technical initiatives within the fraud defense domain under guidance from senior engineers, learning and growing alongside experienced teammates
- Take ownership of components end-to-end while deepening technical understanding through curiosity, questions, and mentorship from the team

As a Software Development Engineer, you will...
- Contribute to complex technical initiatives within the fraud defense domain under guidance from senior engineers
- Build, enhance, and operate control systems and automated enforcement pipelines that prevent fraudulent or abusive use of Audible and respond to threats in real time
- Collaborate with data scientists to iterate on detection models and evaluate false positive rates, and work with product and policy teams to define enforcement thresholds that balance customer trust with business protection
- Write code, participate in code reviews, contribute to design discussions, and participate in incident response when new fraud vectors are identified, supporting rapid mitigation efforts
- Take ownership across the full fraud defense lifecycle—from signal detection through enforcement—growing your technical depth alongside the team

Basic Qualifications:
- Experience using AWS in production environments
- 1+ years of professional software development experience, including design, implementation, and deployment of production applications
- Experience building or contributing to data processing systems
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Java, Python, or Kotlin
- Familiarity with SQL and relational or NoSQL databases
- Familiarity with agentic development and design patterns
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Exposure to Trust & Safety, Abuse Prevention, Anti-Fraud, or Risk Engineering domains
- Familiarity with fraud detection concepts — including rule engines, anomaly detection, or risk scoring
- Exposure to graph-based analysis, data pipelines (ETL/ELT), or streaming architectures (Kafka, Kinesis)
- Experience with AWS services such as SageMaker, PySpark, EMR, Glue, or Step Functions
- Familiarity with privacy-preserving engineering practices, including data anonymization or PII handling
- Ability to navigate ambiguous problem spaces and contribute to solving complex technical challenges
- Enthusiasm for promoting high-quality engineering standards across documentation, unit testing, code reviews, test automation, continuous integration, and deployment
- Experience collaborating across time zones and with geographically distributed teams
