Engineer

At Trustpilot, we're on an incredible journey. We're a profitable, high-growth FTSE-250 company with a big vision: to become the universal symbol of trust. We run the world's largest independent consumer review platform, and while we've come a long way, there's still so much exciting work to do. Come join us at the heart of trust!

(This hybrid role is based in our Edinburgh, London, or Copenhagen tech hubs; applicants must be able to commute to the office weekly)

We're building a brand new team within Trustpilot's Trust Tech department and are looking to welcome a Software Engineer I. You'd be one of the first engineers shaping how this team operates. The team's mission is to protect the integrity of our platform for businesses — building and maintaining automated systems that detect and enforce misuse of Trustpilot's terms of service.

This is not a maintenance role on a legacy codebase. You'll help define how the team works, contribute to architectural decisions early, and work directly alongside Data Scientists and ML Ops to build detection pipelines that operate at real scale. In return, you'll have access to senior engineers who will invest in your growth, and a domain that gives your work genuine meaning.

If you want early responsibility, a clear learning path, and work that matters — this is for you.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Building and maintaining backend services that process high volumes of event-driven data for fraud and misuse detection (SNS, SQS, Lambda)
  • Integrating detection models produced by our Data Science team into scalable enforcement pipelines
  • Maintaining and improving internal React frontends used by our investigations team
  • Contributing to infrastructure decisions using Terraform and AWS CloudFormation
  • Participating in incident response, performance debugging, and database query optimisation (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB)

Who you are:

We're looking for someone who has shipped backend services to real users in a production environment — whether through employment or a demonstrable portfolio with genuine complexity and traffic.

You should be able to point to experience with:

  • TypeScript/JavaScript and Node.js backend development — not just familiarity, but services you've owned end-to-end
  • Relational and non-relational databases (SQL concepts, query optimisation, understanding of when to use each)
  • Asynchronous, event-driven systems — you've worked with message queues or async processing patterns, and understand why they matter at scale
  • Cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) — you've deployed and operated services, not just provisioned a free-tier bucket
  • React — enough to be productive on an internal tooling frontend

You don't need to have seen everything, but you should have genuine production experience behind the skills you list.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with fraud detection, trust & safety, or high-volume data processing
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation)
  • Interest in how ML models integrate into backend systems
  • Comfort working in an environment where the team structure is still being established — you see that as opportunity, not uncertainty

Some relevant technologies and services we use:

  • Languages: TypeScript, JavaScript
  • Infrastructure: AWS (ECS, Lambda, SNS, SQS, CloudFormation), GCP (BigQuery, Pub/Sub), Docker, Terraform
  • Backend: Node.js, Serverless Framework
  • Database: DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, BigQuery
  • Frontend: React, Next.js, CSS Modules
  • Tools: GitHub Actions

A note on seniority:

This is an SE I role. We're not expecting you to have seen everything — we're expecting strong foundations, real production experience, and the drive to grow quickly with support from senior engineers embedded in the team.

What’s in it for you:

  • A range of flexible working options to dedicate time to what matters to you
  • Competitive compensation package + bonus
  • 25 days holiday per year, increasing to 28 days after 2 years of employment
  • Two (paid) volunteering days a year to spend your time giving back to the causes that matter to you and your community
  • Rich learning and development opportunities are supported through the Trustpilot Academy and Blinkist
  • Pension and life insurance
  • Health cash plan, online GP, 24/7 Employee Assistance Plan
  • Full access to Headspace, a popular mindfulness app to promote positive mental health
  • Paid parental leave
  • Season ticket loan and a cycle-to-work scheme
  • Central office location complete with all the snacks and refreshments you can ask for
  • Regular opportunities to connect and get to know your fellow Trusties, including company-wide celebrations and events, ERG activities, and team socials
  • Access to over 4,000 deals and discounts on things like travel, electronics, fashion, fitness, cinema discounts, and more.

Still not sure

We want to be a part of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world of work for all. We’re excited to hear about your experiences as well as how you will contribute to our working culture. So, even if you don’t feel you don't meet all the requirements, we'd still really like to hear from you!
