Trust and Safety Manager, Policy
SniffiesLocation: Seattle preferred; open to candidates working remotely on the West Coast
Salary: $105,000 - $140,000 plus bonus
Company Description
Sniffies is a location-based, interactive web app designed to help gay, bi, and curious individuals connect in a safe, judgment-free environment. Using an innovative map interface, users can discover nearby individuals and popular meetup spots, and participate in live video chats. The platform is accessible on any device with a browser, allowing users to engage without requiring downloads. Sniffies fosters an open, team-driven culture that focuses on creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to positively impacting the community.
About the Role
Sniffies is building out a dedicated Trust & Safety function, and this is one of its first roles. As Trust & Safety Manager, Policy, you will research, write, and maintain the enforcement policies that govern behavior across our platform, which currently has around 3 million monthly users and 20 million messages a day.
Beneath each policy, you will define the enforcement standards that make it operational: severity tiers, the outcomes each tier maps to, and investigation guidance specific enough that moderators and automated systems reach the same result on the same case. You will also own how those policies are expressed publicly, across the Help Center, Community Guidelines, and Terms of Service.
This is a genuinely greenfield remit. Rather than iterating on an established policy library, you will be building the corpus almost from scratch, often defining a standard before there is an established practice to codify. It suits someone who writes precisely, can carry a draft through disagreement to alignment, and would rather resolve ambiguity now than watch it produce inconsistent enforcement later.
Key Responsibilities
Policy Development
- Research and draft platform-wide enforcement policies covering the full spectrum of potential harms a Sniffies user may encounter.
- Work through what each policy has to answer: what behavior is in scope, which surfaces it applies to (Map, profiles, messaging, groups, LivePlay), and what evidence supports a finding.
- Create drafts with Trust & Safety, Legal, Product, and Customer Experience, resolve disagreements, and carry each policy through to approval and launch.
- Maintain a review cadence so policies stay current as the platform, the threat picture, and the regulatory environment change.
- Maintain an effective knowledge management system for our policies, including change tracking.
Enforcement Standards
- Define severity tiers for each policy and map them to enforcement outcomes, including the evidence threshold required for each outcome.
- Write investigation guidance specific enough that two moderators reviewing the same case reach the same result.
- Write policy in a form our classifiers and LLM-based detection can apply, and work with Product and Data Science where the written standard and the model's behavior diverge.
- Own the appeals policy, including what qualifies for appeal and the standard an appeal is judged against.
Public-Facing Expression
- Partner with Customer Support, Product, and Legal on how policies are communicated to users across the Help Center, Community Guidelines, and Terms of Service.
- Keep our public policy statements and internal enforcement standards aligned, so what we say we do matches what we actually do.
Quality and Feedback
- Review enforcement outcomes and appeal decisions for patterns indicating a policy is unclear, miscalibrated, or unworkable in practice.
- Act on input from Investigations, Scaled Abuse, Customer Support, and Product on what casework and abuse trends show, and revise policies accordingly.
Qualifications
- 4+ years in trust and safety policy, content policy, or a closely related field, including authoring policy that shipped and was enforced against.
- Experience writing enforcement standards for moderators, not only principles for executives. That means severity matrices, decision trees, investigation guidance, or labeling guidelines.
- Understanding of how automated enforcement consumes policy, and what makes a policy easy or impossible for a model to apply consistently.
- Ability to hold a position through disagreement with Legal, Product, and Operations, and to change it when the argument is good.
- Clear, precise writing. Ambiguity in a policy becomes inconsistency in enforcement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with the EU Digital Services Act, the UK Online Safety Act, or similar regimes, and what they require of platform policy and transparency reporting.
- Background at a dating, social, or adult platform.
- Experience writing policy for a platform where enforcement is fully automated.
- Experience building a policy corpus from a low base rather than iterating on a mature one.
