Analyst

Venable LLP’s Technology & Innovation Group’s Venable Blue team seeks an Analyst, Trust & Safety and Public Affairs to join the Los Angeles office. This is a non-attorney position.


The Analyst, Trust & Safety and Public Affairs will be responsible for content moderation and abuse reporting, supporting public affairs and public relations efforts, identifying product risks, and policy development and analysis. The Analyst will serve as an important line of defense to help improve the quality and safety of online content, research and define product risks, and accordingly develop appropriate safety policies, guidelines, and strategies. To do so, the Analyst will partner with cross-functional client stakeholders across product, engineering, research, and legal teams to innovate and define Trust & Safety approaches based on leading industry practices and latest market trends. The work of the Analyst will be fast-paced, dynamic, proactive, and impactful. The person in this role will deliver value to our clients, while making a larger impact on society.


Key Responsibilities Include:

Product Risks

  • Establish clear and operable safety and ethical guidelines for products, developing expertise across a range of safety and editorial topics.
  • Assess risks and design mitigations (including policy enforcement frameworks) associated with deployment of products.
  • Monitor and analyze user interactions with products to inform policy development and enforcement.


Public Affairs / Public Relations

  • Generate and analyze media coverage as required by client and manager.
  • Prepare media review documents and associated media list.
  • Support public affairs efforts on projects including with messaging, talking points.
  • Provide support on coalition formation.
  • Support crisis management by developing and implementing risk management plans.
  • Help build client specific media narratives.


Policy

  • Develop, maintain, and implement Trust & Safety policies, apply an analytic approach to delve into the minute details of user behavior, and provide recommendations to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Analyze existing policies and guidelines to identify gaps, inconsistencies, and/or conflicts.
  • Conduct efficacy reviews to determine whether policies are applied accurately.
  • Work with key stakeholders to implement policy changes.


Content Moderation

  • Manage relationships with cross-functional client teams to develop an understanding of and solve online content concerns.
  • Analyze and review user profiles, audio, videos, and text-based content and/or investigating, escalating, and/or resolving issues.
  • Review and remove content according to client guidelines, using specific tools and channels.
  • Investigate, resolve, and relay complex content issues to the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with sensitive issues and content that may be considered offensive or disturbing at times.



Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master’s degree (or equivalent) preferred
  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience within Trust & Safety, privacy, product, policy, cybersecurity, anti-abuse, or related fields
  • Excellent project management skills to both stand up and implement Trust & Safety procedures and policies
  • Consistent track record to use collect, synthesize, analyze, and interpret both quantitative and qualitative data
  • Ability to perform duties objectively, devoid of inherent biases or personal beliefs, in the best interest of the client
  • Deep familiarity and passion for the internet, internet platforms, and internet culture
  • 1-3 years of minimum work experience in high profile settings, such as presenting to leadership and driving cross-functional teams
  • Strong attention to detail, highly determined, and results oriented
  • Hands-on operational Trust & Safety experience in online tech sectors highly valuable, combination of private and government experience acceptable
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for both VP-level stakeholders as well as mid-level stakeholders
  • Executive presence and ability to lead, manage, and coordinate cross-functional teams across numerous stakeholders
  • Critical thinking and ability to perform well under pressure and ambiguous situations
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Docs is required

The anticipated base salary for the Analyst Trust & Safety and Public Affairs is $85,000 - $120,000. The actual salary offered will be based on a number of job related factors including, but not limited to, years of related experience, level of education, skills, credentials and certifications, responsibilities and performance. Additional compensation may include discretionary bonuses and overtime, if eligible. Overtime wages earned will be paid in compliance with applicable law.
