About the Role

Trust & Safety is an evolving field that sits at the intersection of technology, society, policy, and human behavior.

We are looking for a Research Intern to support research projects at Trust & Safety Research (TSR). This is an opportunity for graduate students who are interested in understanding how technology shapes online safety, user behavior, and broader social issues.

You will work alongside the TSR team on projects that may involve AI, online platforms, policy, digital harms, user behavior, and emerging Trust & Safety issues, with opportunities to contribute to both research and practical outputs.

What You’ll Do

Depending on the project, you may:

  • Support desk research, literature reviews, and policy research
  • Help analyze and synthesize academic, policy, and industry sources
  • Support interviews, surveys, workshops, and other research activities
  • Assist with research briefs, reports, presentations, and project materials
  • Support the TSR team with research-related project activities and documentation
  • Contribute ideas and perspectives based on your academic background and research interests

The specific research topics and project responsibilities will vary depending on ongoing projects and your background and interests.

Research Background

We welcome candidates with research experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • AI & Technology: AI governance, AI ethics, responsible AI, AI safety, algorithmic governance
  • Policy & Society: public policy, technology policy, regulation, digital governance, human rights
  • Human Behavior: psychology, behavioral science, safety, crime, harm, or risk
  • Language & Online Communities: linguistics, sociolinguistics, internet language, internet culture, online communities, hate speech
  • Human-Centered Technology: HCI, UX research, human-centered design, trust and technology

We are also open to candidates from adjacent research fields that can contribute to Trust & Safety.

What We’re Looking For

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Ability to independently conduct research and synthesize information
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional working proficiency in Japanese and English
  • Genuine interest in Trust & Safety, online safety, technology, and social issues
  • Comfortable working on open-ended research questions and adapting to different projects

Experience with qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods research, literature reviews, interviews, surveys, content analysis, or policy research is a plus.

You do not need prior Trust & Safety experience. We are looking for people with a strong research foundation, intellectual curiosity, and an interest in applying research to real-world technology and social issues.

What You’ll Gain

You will gain hands-on experience in Trust & Safety research, work alongside researchers and industry stakeholders, and learn how research is applied to real-world technology and social issues.
