About the team
As a member of the US Legal Policy Operations team, you will be integral in ensuring that TikTok is a safe and trustworthy place for our community. Our team is a specialized group covering Privacy, Intellectual Property & Identity, Legal Response, and Investigations. Within and across each vertical, we work together to develop efficient workflows and thoughtful policies that mitigate legal risk. We are here to ensure a scalable model to meet what the law requires in an operationally feasible way while protecting user rights. We support our Trust and Safety organization, and wider company colleagues ensure that we are sustaining an equitable platform that inspires creativity across all markets.

On the Civil Response Team, you will be a part of the larger Legal Response Team (LRT) within LPO and responsible for handling civil requests primarily from non-government entities. Through close partnerships with cross-functional stakeholders, to include Legal, Policy, and Product & Process teams, you will be responsible for handling time sensitive escalations sometimes involving high profile cases and creators. This highly motivating and impactful work gives you the opportunity to work with global cross-functional colleagues to frame our legal policies and operational procedures for TikTok.

Our team performs a critical function that supports our efforts to address objectionable or disturbing content. Content that this team interacts with includes images, video, and text related to every-day life, but it can also include (but is not limited to) bullying; hate speech; child abuse; sexual assault; torture; bestiality; self-harm; suicide; and murder.

It is possible that this role will be exposed to harmful content on a daily basis.

In order to enhance collaboration and cross-functional partnerships, among other things, at this time, our organization follows a hybrid work schedule that requires employees to work in the office 3 days a week, or as directed by their manager/department. We regularly review our hybrid work model, and the specific requirements may change at any time.

Responsibilities
- Demonstrate operational excellence on a team that evaluates legal risk while balancing user privacy.
- Review and respond to a range of legal process and preservation requests for user data from US law enforcement agencies.
- Be responsible for handling sensitive information in a manner complying with our Terms of Service, applicable laws and regulations, and internal SOPs while protecting user privacy.
- Independently analyze civil third-party requests for data and evaluate available information.
- Prepare responses to third-party data requests and serve as primary point of contact for third parties seeking user data, including negotiating scope of requests, and achieving consensus.
- Escalate to and collaborate with legal counsel relating to complex civil litigation pursuant to third-party requests for data.
- Develop policies and procedures to ensure effective compliance with requests and to scale team and company growth.
- Collaborate closely with cross functional internal stakeholders
- Gather and analyze relevant data to ensure effective compliance with requests and scale with team and company growth across US and regional markets.
- Create and articulate written and/or verbal responses to questions from private or defense attorneys, regulatory agencies, and other government entities seeking user for civil investigations in addition to internal teams regarding Civil Response scope, policy, and process.
- Draft internal documentation, workflows and procedures concerning safety and data disclosure.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- 1+ years of work in Trust and Safety, Legal Compliance, Privacy, Legal Operations or Corporate Legal teams.
- Knowledge of legal documents (e.g. civil and criminal subpoenas, court orders, and search warrants).
- Proven successful record in handling sensitive matters and sensitive data.
- Excellent communication skills, especially regarding legal documents.
- Able to coordinate with global teams in different time-zones, especially Eastern Time Zone
- Address sensitive content issues, including but not limited to graphic images, videos and writings, offensive or derogatory language, child safety, and other potentially objectionable material

Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of legal documents (e.g., civil, and criminal subpoenas, court orders and search warrants).
- Relevant Legal response or Law Enforcement Response Team experience- especially global markets.
- Your ability to work in a high tempo environment, adapt, respond to day-to-day challenges of the role.
- Your resilience and commitment to self-care to manage the emotional demands of the role.

The base salary range for this position in the selected city is $71778 - $106667 annually.
Compensation may vary outside of this range depending on a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience, and location. Base pay is one part of the Total Package that is provided to compensate and recognize employees for their work, and this role may be eligible for additional discretionary bonuses/incentives, and restricted stock units.
Benefits may vary depending on the nature of employment and the country work location. Employees have day one access to medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) savings plan with company match, paid parental leave, short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, wellbeing benefits, among others. Employees also receive 10 paid holidays per year, 10 paid sick days per year and 17 days of Paid Personal Time (prorated upon hire with increasing accruals by tenure).
